Middle Ear Implants

In otoplasty, middle ear implants serve as replacements for damaged or redundant ossicles. Thanks to them, the defect mechanical chain of sound transmission between the tympanum and the Stapes footplate can be restored.

There are two basic types of middle ear implants: 
 
1. Total implants, or TORP ( Total Ossicular Replacement Prosthesis) – total ossicular replacement; functional stapes footplate.
2. Partial implants, or PORP ( Partial Ossicular Replacement Prosthesis) – partial ossicular replacement; stapes still present, stapes footplate functional.

Titanium has established itself as the dominant material used for middle ear implants today. Titanium’s specific qualities are clearly better suited than those of gold or hydroxyapatite. This is especially so with regard to biocompatibility and biostability, as well as the purely mechanical qualities.

We offer you our titanium middle ear implants in trimmable (removable head); two part, and also one part variants. This is valid for both the partial and total implants. Further product specifications can be found on the appropriate pages.

Titanium Middle Ear Implants, trimable

In 1998, Spiggle & Theis was the first company world wide to introduce titanium middle ear implants with removable heads onto the market.

The idea behind this development was a clear reduction in storage space for the user. Prior to this, to cover all eventualities, every possible length of partial and total implants had had to be held in storage. This meant that a stock of 18 implants was always necessary for the range between 3 - 7,5 mm in TORPs and 2 - 5,5 mm in PORPs, with a subdivision every 0,5 mm.

Instead of having to store 1-2 pieces of each PORP and TORP size, this system makes it possible that just 4 implants can cover the size spectrum mentioned above. Thus creating a considerable reduction in both costs and the storage space required.

Partial Middle Ear Implants

• can be trimmed easily to optimal length in steps of 1 mm from 5,5 / 5,0 mm to 2,5 / 2,0 mm
• bell can be placed at optimal angle on the stapes head
• rough surface of head and inner surface of the bell to prevent slippage

Total Middle Ear Implants

• two parts, shaft with head and removable shoe
• shaft can be trimmed easily to optimal length
• no sharp edges after trimming
• can be trimmed easily to optimal length in steps of 1 mm from 7,8 / 7,3 mm to 3,8 / 3,3 mm.

Titanium Middle Ear Implants, fixed lengths

Our so called „fixed length“ middle ear implants are one part, partial or total implants made of pure titanium. The implants are produced from one piece which makes them more stable in comparison to welded or soldered counterpart products.

The advantages over the models with removable heads are most apparent when it comes to the handling. It is also possible to produce shorter models of the fixed length implants, this is of particular interest for partial implants.
